150 years ago Maria Mahoi began making a life in this part of the world. Daughter of a Hawaiian immigrant, life back then was what you made it. Not famous, but known as one of the early settlers of this area.
We called them pioneers; Sometimes leaders. People who prepare the way for others. Creating their own opportunities. The authors of their own stories. They made their way by persevering; pursuing their livelihoods with purpose and sheer determination. Maria Mahoi was my great, great, great grandmother.
So what is the significance?
There are lessons in history that can frame the future. There are behaviours and practices that we can revisit to understand what it takes to be successful. We can use these lessons to review our own goals to ensure our unique place in the world is pursued with purpose.

For our pioneer ancestors, many of their choices were driven purely by the will to survive a harsh, untamed environment. Their actions were deliberate and purposeful as they established a society with rules and order, practice and procedure, culture and creativity.
The pace of change in today’s business environment can seem harsh and untamed at times. The difference between survival and failure can be the deliberate approach you choose to take.
